The fourth-largest crowd in franchise history turned out to watch the Dash in their season opener Sunday against San Diego.Less than a week after learning that head coach and general manager James Clarkson was suspended while under joint investigation by the National Women’s Soccer League and its players’ association, the Dash surrendered a goal in the 87th minute to fall 1-0 in their first meeting with the expansion Wave at PNC Stadium.
“This has been a challenging week for everybody involved, and I just want to say full credit to our staff and our players,” Lowdon said.Dash players were equally complimentary of Lowdon and her staff for stepping up in a difficult situation. “We did what we wanted to do,” Hanson said. “A big focus for us was sticking to the gameplan, and when it’s working, continuing to do those things. First half, we had to settle in, and then we generated some really dangerous chances, as well as forcing them to play predictably, which was nice for us as defenders. So, the front five did a great job of making that easier for us.
