With the CFL Draft approaching, it's time to have a conversation about making changes to the Canadian ratio.
The majority of a CFL team comprises guys who need a passport to play in Canada and most sing loudest to “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
This is a recurring and tempestuous debate, usually surfacing as the CFL approaches its annual draft and the opening of training camps in mid-May.Article content There have been exceptions, where tailbacks Andrew Harris and Jon Cornish or defensive end Brent Johnson have had Hall of Fame careers as Canadians in the so-called “skill” positions. Even as rosters have expanded and Canadian talent has improved, there’s becoming less room for guys who grew up dreaming of playing for the Roughriders, Calgary Stampeders or Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Meanwhile the NFL has created more jobs by expanding practice rosters while the fledgling USFL and XFL seem to be gaining a toehold during the spring football market.
