New coordinator and his QB seem comfortable in their roles

“You don’t ever want wholesale change, but you definitely bend to whoever’s behind centre,” said Jeffrey. “There are some things Mason does well, some things Jake does well. There are routes concepts Mason likes and doesn’t like; a lot of times other quarterbacks like the opposite.

“Jake has good confidence. He’s got a calming effect in the huddle. He sees routes over the middle very well because of his height. Sometimes shorter quarterbacks miss things or bypass certain routes because they just can’t see it with a lineman in front. There’s nothing Jake can’t see.” Jeffrey said he learned last season that injuries or illnesses can seriously disrupt offensive game plans, so before the Roughriders had even signed Harris as a free agent he designed an offence that could adjust to different quarterbacks. When the offence wasn’t working, Fine was struggling and the Riders were stubbornly keeping him as the starter, there was plenty of heated criticism aimed at the new coordinator. He was OK with that, too.

“To me, this is the best organization in the CFL,” said Jeffrey. “It’s probably got some NFL teams beat in terms of the quality and class of the fan base. There’s no place I’d rather be. “Having heat on you is 10 times better than nobody caring. I’ve been in organizations with no following. The fans didn’t seem to care, it wasn’t supported. This situation is way better. There are obviously downsides to it, but the upsides greatly outweigh the downsides. No question.”
