Candidate sits down for 1-on-1 interview.
Lurie, the latest major candidate to jump into the 2024 race to become San Francisco's next mayor, is positioning himself as the antidote to a city government beleaguered by inefficiency and ineffectiveness.
I was asked by a number of people to think about running when the mayor passed away, Mayor Lee. It was a really traumatic time for our city. Honestly, I was excited about the idea of a woman leading our city and having my daughter have somebody to look up to who was a woman. And so I decided that it was not the time.
Let's tease that out a little bit. Standing up enough shelter rapidly for all of the people that are currently on the street — I mean, we're talking about thousands of beds, correct? We always keep hearing why we can't do things. It's time for us to talk about what we can do. And we can take care of our unhoused neighbors more compassionately, more empathetically without allowing them to sleep and die on our streets.
I'm sure you've heard that and read the analysis that the three most prominent candidates in this election are politically very similar, and that this is going to be a war of personalities. I wonder if you agree or reject that analysis? It's a fair question. I have been given many opportunities. And I've always been made aware of that. My parents instilled in me the obligation that I had, from a very early age, that I had to be part of the community, that I had to be part of solving issues and problems. I just would ask people to look at what I've done with my life and with my career. It's always been in service to our community, service to our underserved communities.
So I wanted to touch on housing a little bit. I'm wondering what your outlook is on the city's ability to implement the demands of the Housing Element and sort of where we go from here?
