Daniel Ellsberg, the legendary whistleblower, has died at 92. In 1971, Ellsberg leaked the Pentagon Papers which showed US military officials were not truthful about the Vietnam War.

Ellsberg was charged by the Dept. of Justice in 1973 for violating the Espionage Act and faced a potential maximum sentence of 115 years in prison. Ellsberg, at the time, said he had no regrets and called his actions "my duty as a citizen."

Ellsberg worked as an analyst for the US military when he shared the Pentagon Papers with the press. The result of the reporting on the documents sparked a national debate over freedom of the press and helped to eventually bring an end to the war. After the release of the Pentagon Papers, Ellsberg was an outspoken anti-war activist in the Bay Area and across the nation. He was a supporter of other whistleblowers, such as Chelsea Manning, Julian Assange and Edward Snowden. Ellsberg called the Bay Area home for more than 40 years. He was a lecturer at UC Berkeley and joined in on the Occupy Cal protests in 2012.
