While a ground invasion of Gaza may be inevitable at this point, it could also create a new set of problems Israel will have to deal with.
More than a week after the deadliest attack inside Israel in 50 years, the Israel Defense Forces are preparing for their largest and most difficult military operation since the 1982 war in Lebanon. Approximately 360,000 reservists have been called up, with most of the personnel being stationed near Israel’s border with the Gaza Strip. A restricted military zone has been declared in the area.
The question is whether this objective can be accomplished — and, even if it could, whether Israel is prepared for the “day after.” First, nobody should be under any illusions about how challenging an Israeli ground incursion into Gaza will be. There’s a reason why previous Israeli prime ministers, including Netanyahu, did everything they could to avoid it.
