Talkeetna musher Dallas Seavey won a historic sixth Iditarod title Tuesday in Nome, breaking a record he shared with race icon Rick Swenson.

Seavey didn’t take the lead for good until Sunday afternoon, when he breezed through the checkpoint of Unalakleet to overtake Holmes. Beals last led the race Friday night about halfway between Kaltag and Unalakleet; Holmes gave up the lead shortly after arriving in Unalakleet at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Tuesday’s win marks Dallas Seavey’s 10th straight top-five finish in the Iditarod. Besides his six first-place trophies, Seavey has come in second twice and fourth twice .
