Austin City Manager T.C. Broadnax announced on Thursday that Dallas Police Chief Edgardo "Eddie" García has been hired as the new Assistant City Manager.As Assistant City Manager, Garcia will oversee the public safety portfolio, which includes the Austin Fire Department, Austin Police Department, Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services, Downtown Austin Community Court, Forensic Science, and Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
According to the city memo, Garcia brings over 30 years of extensive experience in public safety to the role. He is recognized for implementing policies and initiatives that build community trust and increase transparency while promoting fair and impartial policing practices. In his most recent position as Police Chief of the Dallas Police Department, which was appointed in 2021, he led the ninth-largest police force in the United States.
Originally from Puerto Rico, Garcia is known for his energetic and hands-on leadership style, which incorporates modern policing practices to effectively reduce crime while ensuring community support. He currently serves as the President of the Major Cities Chiefs Association, a professional organization comprising police executives from across the U.S. and Canada.as their chief of police. Garcia was also reportedly being courted by the Houston Police Department after the departure of its chief.
