Migraine sufferers in England will be offered a daily pill on the NHS that can reduce the frequency of debilitating headaches. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) has recommended the use of Atogepant, a once-daily medicine, for the first time, providing more treatment options for around 170,000 patients. The pill will be available for those who experience at least four migraine days a month and have tried three other treatments without success.
Migraine sufferers in England are to be offered a daily pill on the NHS that can halve the frequency of debilitating headaches.
Helen Knight, director of medicines evaluation at Nice, said: “Currently, the most effective options for people with chronic migraines who have already tried three preventative treatments are drugs that need to be injected. Atogepant works by blocking the receptor of a protein found in the sensory nerves of the head and neck, known as calcitonin gene-related peptide .It has called for “swift” access to the drug to ensure sufferers “can benefit from them as quickly as possible”.
Health minister Andrew Stephenson said: “Migraines affect millions of people in this country and this new treatment will help prevent recurring migraine attacks when other medicines have failed.
