Four high school friends called themselves “the Wolfpack” and shared a house in Shaw — until prosecutors say Jeffrey Neal used a hammer to beat Delano Wingfield and Leon Young to death.

Delano Wingfield , left, and Leon Young , right, were killed in 2014. A District man was convicted Tuesday of killing two of his roommates, burying one victim’s body in the back yard of the home they had shared and hiding the other’s in the attic.

Prosecutors think that Wingfield, 23, was killed about May 26 or May 27, 2014, and buried in a shallow grave. Young, 22, was killed about two weeks later, his body tucked in the attic of the house. Both men were beaten with hammers. But in her closing argument Friday, Assistant U.S. Attorney Shana Fulton played down any sexual relationship among the three men and instead described a house that brewed with tension over nonpayments of rent and utility bills.

During trial, prosecutors called about 40 witnesses and showed nearly 400 exhibits, including graphic autopsy photos that several jurors turned away from. Prosecutors say Neal killed Young out of rage that had nothing to do with self-defense. And they said it may never be clear exactly what led to his final argument with Wingfield.
