With events unfolding in Ukraine, there has been a rapid response in terms of travel restrictions across the EU region in the past several days

asking that the rail sector take as decisive action as the airline industry and stop operating freight and passenger trains in and out of Russia. The EU, U.K., Canada and the U.S. announced that it would be reviewing the purchase of second passports by Russian citizens.“we commit to taking measures to limit the sale of citizenship—so-called golden passports—that let wealthy Russians connected to the Russian government become citizens of our countries and gain access to our financial systems.

Portugal, for instance, announced it is considering the suspension of its Golden visa program for Russian citizens. Portugal’s Foreigners and Borders Service declared that a total of €277.8 million had been invested in the country from Russian citizens in exchange for golden visas since the program was launched–these passports allow holders and their families to travel freely across the Schengen area without the need for visas.

Greece followed suit on March 1, announcing a suspension of any applications by Russian citizens applying for golden passports. In a statement issued by the EU on Monday 28 February, further sanctions were applied, some of them travel restrictions. In total, there is now a travel ban on 680 people, who are prohibited these from entering or transiting through EU territory.
