A Connecticut man who was found to commit cannibalism, has been granted temporary overnight leaves.
“Mr. Tyree Smith was granted the second phase of his Temporary Leave on August 25, 2023. Mr. Smith remains confined to the hospital with Temporary Leave privileges that can include overnights in the community in a supportive, supervised setting,”Smith was committed to Whiting in 2013 after a trial in Superior Court in Bridgeport, in which a three-judge panel found him not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect.
On Jan. 23, the Courant reported, a cousin, Nicole Rabb, told police Smith arrived at her house in mid-December and said he had “to get blood on his hands,” according to the arrest warrant affidavit. According to the arrest warrant affidavit, “Tyree told the blows to head were so severe that he was able to remove an eye from the man’s head along with pieces of brain matter and a piece of his skull.”
