The fire started on Friday around Welch Creek Road and Calaveras Road in Sunol. Evacuations and road closures along Welch Creek Road are still in place, said Cal Fire spokeswoman Chelsea Burkett. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Burkett said Cal Fire is handling the fire from the ground and there are no aircraft operating in the area. Several engines, dozers, hand crews and water tenders and 89 personnel were also assigned to the fire. The firefighters are working on reinforcing and establishing containment, Burkett said.
“Access and steep terrain continue to present issues however, firefighters are making good progress in mitigating hazards, and improving and reinforcing containment lines,” stated Cal Fire’s latest update on the Creek Fire. On Monday, an evacuation order for Calaveras Road was downgraded to a warning, allowing residents to return home as response agencies continued working in the area.
