It was 19 degrees at Kelly Field as of 10 a.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service. Wind speeds were about 14 miles per hour, though CPS Energy’s chief meteorologist said he expects winds to slow throughout the afternoon. CPS Energy on Wednesday brought its Spruce 2 coal-fired power plant — the city’s largest generating plant — out of maintenance so it would be producing power during the cold snap. All seven of the utility’s power stations were operating ahead of the cold weather.
Although San Antonio was holding up well on Friday, thousands of households in the Hill Country lost power amid the freezing temperatures.
