As the Democratic National Convention draws closer, leaders of the Chicago Police Department and United States Secret Service on Tuesday again sought to highlight their preparation efforts.

As the Democratic National Convention draws closer, leaders of the Chicago Police Department and United States Secret Service on Tuesday again sought to highlight their preparation efforts ahead of the August convention that’s sure to attract thousands of protesters.
The Secret Service will be in charge of security at the United Center and McCormick Place, where the official DNC events will be held. CPD will retain its jurisdiction across the city and be tasked with handling the expected protests. Other law enforcement agencies — FBI, ATF, Illinois State Police, Cook County sheriff’s police — will also assist.
In recent months, Snelling has said repeatedly that CPD officers are undergoing First Amendment training to ensure safety and protect the rights of any demonstrators. Criminal activity, though, won’t be tolerated. The superintendent added that between 2,500 and 3,000 CPD officers are receiving extra training to respond to potential civil unrest and protests. Extended shifts and canceled days off for officers are a near certainty too.
