From a practical sense, letting Barkley walk this offseason made sense for the rebuilding Giants. A team in their situation should not spend big money on a running back entering Year 7. The Giants had just won a 2022 wild-card playoff game in the first season of the Schoen/Daboll regime. (That turned out to be deceptive, because the 9-7-1 Giants weren’t actually that good. Then Schoen decided to pay quarterback Daniel Jones $82 million over two years, while franchise tagging Barkley. And that is the choice that might doom Schoen.
