FRISCO —Tyler Smith caught himself Thursday evening. The Cowboys had just drafted the former Tulsa left tackle with their No. 24 overall pick. He did it. He...

, who is expected to start at left guard while practicing also at left tackle, flashed his sense of humor, detailed his violent on-field temperament and humbly accepted his jersey assignment.Smith turned 21 this month, so he was not born for the first seven of Larry Allen’s 12 seasons in Dallas. He was 4 when Allen won the ESPN “Strongest Man” title, completing 43 reps on the 225-pound bench press at the Pro Bowl.“It’s an honor to wear that number,” Smith said.

The Cowboys arranged for their team bus to pick up Smith, his mother Patricia Smith, brother Isaac Smith and agent Joby Branion at his mother’s house in Fort Worth. Around noon, they arrived at the team facility where photographers and reporters greeted them.Scott Agulnek, who is overseeing the team’s football PR staff, guided Smith to the names of Cowboys legends that are engraved on the marble floor, pointing first to Tony Dorsett and then Allen.

“She rarely forgot, but I love to see people laugh,” Tyler Smith said. “I love to laugh at myself. It helps you live longer for sure. You see how young she looks right here. I think I did my job.”Smith has a ways to go in terms of his football fundamentals, particularly in pass protection. But the physicality with which he plays very much hits the mark.

“It’s us versus them,” Smith said. “That’s just what it has to be. My job as an offensive lineman is to set the tone and protect the quarterback. That dude across from me, his job is to hit my quarterback and try to basically blow up what we’re doing. Every time I line up across from somebody, I play with the mindset that they think they’re better than me.

“They’re trying to take food out of my mouth. They’re trying to take food out of my teammates’ mouths. They’re trying to put us down. At the end of the day, I’ve got guys in this building who are trying to feed their families. It takes all 11 to do that. I like to set the tone and want them to think twice about getting up when they go against me.”Smith doesn’t have time to marinate in emotion. He wants to be next.
