The COVID-19 outbreaks among nursing home residents and staff are straining long-term care facilities
The number of active coronavirus cases among Texas nursing home residents jumped more than 76%, from 3,434 to 6,053, between Jan. 7 and Jan. 14, according to Texas Health and Human Services data. In the long-term care region containing Dallas, Denton, Tarrant and Collin counties, cases rose about 97%, from 802 to 1,580, during the same period.
“It’s a pretty quick increase [in outbreaks] compared to just a couple of weeks ago. The vaccines and boosters are working, but there are breakthroughs,” he said. “What’s good is that most of [the cases] have been mild symptoms and relatively few hospitalizations associated with these outbreaks.” But the increasing case counts – among both residents and nursing home staff – are straining already short-staffed facilities, said Kevin Warren, president and CEO of the Texas Health Care Association, the largest long-term care association in the state.
