Recording artist Randy Travis performs on stage at An Evening with Randy Travis at the GRAMMY Museum on September 21, 2011 in Los Angeles, California. Country music legend Randy Travis released a new song recently nearly a decade after a stroke took away his ability to sing, and how he was able to do it is really quite remarkable.
The 65-year-old, who suffered a massive stroke in 2013 that saw him reportedly given just a 2% chance to live, is still here but the stroke hit the part of his brain that controls speech and language hardest, according to a CBS Report.Travis and his team used AI to help put the song together. It was a process that included a surrogate singer, James DuPre, who did the vocal tracks. Travis’ producers then used AI software to take 42 of his vocal-isolated recordings and turn them into the song.
The use of AI to create music has been controversial, but the song certainly sounds like Travis. And, as folks have debated the merits of the technology in the wake of this release, Travis himself took to social media with a message.
“Until I hear this, I never realized how much I have missed your voice & presence,” another responded. “It filled a hole in my heart … thank you and God Bless.”Son of country music legend battling kidney failure.
