As fully autonomous driverless cars eventually reach our roadways, could future car buyers have to weigh the ethical design and encoded values of their new purchases as well?
As vehicles begin to make driving decisions on their own, they will increasingly be forced to make the same ethical decisions as human drivers based on a set of encoded values.
The challenge with driverless cars is that all of these ethical values and moral priorities must be encoded into its software apriori. Perhaps one company emphasizes placing pedestrians first and touts that the car will sacrifice itself and its passengers to avoid hitting a pedestrian. To some in society that might be a moral value they closely identify with and would embrace that vehicle over others.
Alternatively, what if someday instead of car companies hardcoding ethical values into their driverless software, there was a universal vehicular ethics app that users simply installed on their phones and provided them with a digital survey to indicate their ethical preferences? They would fill this survey out once and then every driverless car they entered, whether their own vehicle or a rideshare, would automatically adjust its decision-making to adhere to the user’s preferences.
