Costa Mesa reflected that pattern, with Democrats now outnumbering Republicans by about 500, or less than 1% of registrations.However, Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley and especially Newport Beach remain distinctly Republican. “They just have a different mind-set,” Foley said. “They care about the environment. They care about sensible gun [laws]. They care about diversity and women’s rights.”
Republicans had pluralities in City Council District 1 — including Mesa Verde and the South Coast Collection area — and District 6, which covers virtually all of the Eastside.
