WASHINGTON, DC - JUNE 06: U.S. Sen. John Cornyn speaks to members of the press at the U.S. Capitol June 6, 2022 in Washington, DC. The Senate has returned from a week-long recess for Memorial Day. U.S. Sen. John Cornyn on Monday said federal lawmakers are considering legislation aimed at “keeping guns out of the hands of people who are already legally prohibited from having them,” while dismissing calls to ban assault weapons or expand background checks as nonstarters.
In the days following the May 24 shooting that left 19 students and two teachers dead, President Joe Biden and other Democrats have urged lawmakers to ban assault weapons, institute stricter background checks and raise the minimum age for people to buy semi-automatic weaponsHouse Democrats have said they are preparing to include these proposals in forthcoming gun control bills, none of which are likely to pass the Senate.Meanwhile, a bipartisan cadre of senators led by Cornyn and Democratic Sen.
Cornyn suggested Congress could turn to legislation with a similar goal in mind this time, along with policies aimed at “strengthening mental health” and “bolstering school security.”“What I'm interested in is keeping guns out of the hands of those who, by current law, are not supposed to have them: people with mental health problems, people who have criminal records,” he said.
