Assemblymember Laura Friedman wants “speed cameras” to give tickets in L.A., Glendale, Long Beach, S.F. and Oakland.
Speed cameras could be coming to the streets of three major cities in Los Angeles County and two in the Bay Area in a technology-centered effort to get drivers to slow down and to curb a rising tide of traffic fatalities — particularly involving pedestrians and cyclists.
Assembly Bill 645 would authorize “speed camera” pilot programs in school zones and on high-injury streets or thoroughfares with speeding problems in Los Angeles, Long Beach, Glendale, Oakland and San Francisco. “We are trying to stop people from egregiously speeding. We are not trying to be punitive,” Friedman said on April 17, in an interview.
“Pedestrian and bicycle deaths continue to rise. Speeding is going up. More and more cities are asking for permission to pilot this concept,” Friedman said. “Cities are asking to try this as a tool. This is a much gentler approach.” have installed speed cameras. In some streets in D.C., traffic fatalities have dropped 71%, he noted. “One hundred percent, I know this will reduce serious traffic injuries and fatalities,” Kevitt said. But opposition to speed cameras in California, and to Friedman’s bill, is growing.
Friedman said the cameras would only photograph a license plate, not the face of a driver. The bill states all data must be deleted in five days if no data has been used, and within 60 days if a ticket was issued.
