Third-generation gelato maker rides tricycle around Houston to sell authentic Italian treat
Constantine Koutas serves customers his homemade gelato at the Urban Harvest Farmers Market on Saturday, April 1, 2023.His first major events were the Jazzy Sunday concerts at Discovery Green, Emancipation Park and Buffalo Bayou. He's since been a regular at Discovery Green. He also does private special events, bridal expos and showers, farmers markets, birthday parties and more.
Born in Greece and raised in Australia, Koutas' parents bought a gelateria, where he worked as a teen. His mother encouraged him to take home economics to ensure he knew how to cook and clean when he went out on his own. He lived in Japan and moved to the U.S. nearly a decade ago. Americans, he said, like gelato with bolder flavors and an element of crunch, which is why he's added pistachios to certain varieties. His soy wasabi gelato captures the flavors of Japan. He also has perfected unique flavors such as green tea, yuzu and ginger.Still, he also sells plenty of the classics, including butter pecan, vanilla and chocolate.
