Haeleigh Stamper, 16, and De’Arreis “Dee Dee” Smith, 18, were fatally shot by a gunman reportedly looking for someone at their Mississippi after-Prom party early Sunday morning. Friends remembered them warmly.
A 19-year-old man was arrested for going on a deadly rampage at an after-prom party in Mississippi in the early hours of Sunday morning, according to police. Six teenagers were wounded by gunfire in the shooting, and two later died of their injuries.
Jones, who was not at the party, said she learned that Haeleigh had been shot when Haeleigh’s mom called her before 7 a.m. on Sunday. “For the first hour, all I could do was just shake. I was convinced that she was gonna text me and be like, ‘I’m not dead. It was a prank,’” she said. Jones said she and Haeleigh had talked about running an animal sanctuary together one day, raising their own kids as “third-generation best friends.” Haeleigh was also thinking about studying to become a lawyer, but wasn’t sure where she wanted to go to college yet.
“I don’t want it to be swept under the rug. I don’t want to say I don’t want justice for De’Arreis, but I want accountability, because justice would be him being here with me,” she said.
