I thought I was avoiding these pitfalls by giving the same career talk I give to Ph.D. students and postdocs. During my presentation, I discussed the variety of fields that benefit from hiring STEM students, including those in the room, whether they were looking to apply for jobs with their associate degrees or would go on to graduate from a 4-year school or beyond—everything from consulting to teaching to communications to yet more lab work.
I’ve thought a lot about why I had so much difficulty completing that sentence. It wasn’t because I couldn’t think of something complimentary to say—on the contrary, the students were great, talented, and ambitious, just like any good science students. Yet it’s such a facile way to characterize not only the students themselves, but the institution of community college in general and the way it has long been underappreciated in the sciences. In fact, thinking of it as underappreciated seemed condescending, implying that those who didn’t go to community college are the ones who get to do the appreciating.
