When test results are not definitive, interpreting them requires integrating their uncertain message with the uncertain belief that motivated taking the test, namely, the prior probability of having the condition. With COVID-19 tests, the prior probability should be higher if users have COVID-19-like symptoms or think that they might have been exposed to the virus.
