GOP committee leader Rep. Ryan Mackenzie, R-Lehigh County, argued that the bill is unnecessary, given that “these protections are already enshrined in state and federal law,” and that many unions are “doing a tremendous job within the current structure.” Other Republican members, however, suggested the bill was more than messaging, and that the language could be used to permit unions to violate other laws under the guise of organizing and bargaining.

Committee Chair Jason Dawkins, D-Philadelphia, cautioned against raising broad hypotheticals and construing the bill as an attack on existing law; the language “is not intended to overturn current law,” noted Ryan Beaston, the committee’s staff director.
