The utility, working in partnership with Illinois environmental advocacy program Openlands, will provide grant funding to the Evanston-based Mitchell Museum of the American Indian as well as the village of Wilmette and Glenview and the Glenview Park District as part of the 2023 Com Ed Green Region program.
The stated goal of the initiative, which began in 2012, is to assist in preservation efforts, ease climate change and improve safety of habitats for pollinators and other wildlife, according to a statement.
The Village of Wilmette received a $5,000 grant as it works toward expanding its Edens Pollinator Corridor by transforming 1.73 acres of land currently seen as underutilized into a dedicated pollinator habitat, Assistant to the Director of Engineering Public Works Kate McDonnell stated. McDonnell said this is a continuation of an effort going back to 2019 as the first phase of the corridor was installed at Lake and Laramie Avenues, noting individuals are stopping to view the existing habitat.
