Column: There are still plenty of opportunities for job seekers looking to fill holiday positions.

An annual job fair at South Suburban College in South Holland offered employers seeking seasonal and permanent workers.

Walmart announced in September plans to hire 40,000 U.S. workers in seasonal and full-time roles including store associates, truck drivers and call center staff. A year earlier ahead of the holidays, the company announced plans to hire about 150,000 store associates, most of them permanent, full-time positions. Its U.S. average wage is more than $17 an hour, the company said.

Amazon, which operates a fulfillment center in Matteson, said it is hiring more than 150,000 seasonal full-time and part-time workers nationally across its customer fulfillment and transportation network this holiday season. That mirrors last year’s announcement, Challenger said. Workers can earn on average more than $19 per hour to start based on position and location, according to Amazon spokesperson Caitlin Polochak.

Employment in the retail sector in August, the highest number seen in the last five years, has increased by more than 800,000 in the last two years and is up more than 2.5 million since the peak of the pandemic, according to the federation. Retail employment nationally didn’t change much in September from August; it dipped by 1,100 jobs, the Labor Department revealed earlier this month.

An annual job fair hosted Thursday by U.S.Rep. Robin Kelly at South Suburban College attracted 52 employers.
