Professional rugby team's first game at SDSU's new stadium comes Saturday at 4 p.m. Team trained at Twentynine Palms' Marine base.

San Diego State’s new stadium is a rather big deal to the San Diego Legion professional rugby team that will open its sixth season Saturday at 4 p.m.

The event’s international viewing audience should be massive in light of the 2019 men’s World Cup — staged in Japan — attracting some 850 million viewers, according to World Rugby, the sport’s governing body. The Legion’s current team looks to reprise — and build upon — the franchise’s trips to the postseason in its first and second seasons.

That the whole coaching staff has returned, however, bodes well, presuming the coaches know what they’re doing. A year ago it wasn’t until a week before training camp that Lee and coaches, grounded in New Zealand by pandemic-related travel restrictions, took over. “It was incredibly effective and useful at building the team culture,” said Haigh, who should hope that the experience parallels that of the 1963 San Diego Chargers, who won the American Football League title months after training at sweltering Rough Acres Ranch some 70 miles east.

One to watch is Blair Cowan, who earned the Legion’s captaincy. The forward from New Zealand played 12 professional seasons in the United Kingdom. “He has an old head on some pretty rugged shoulders,” Haigh said.
