Juan Soto helped Padres' 2022 team win a wild card playoff berth and is 2023 team's best offensive producer

Fans who feel deprived can take solace that Juan Soto is resembling Juan Soto.

No dummies, pitchers have responded by working around Soto. He earned four bases on balls — don’t call them free passes — in a recent game and leads the majors with 50 walks. On the surface, it’s the same virtuous cycle of plate discipline and slugging that made Soto a wrecking ball and a World Series champion with the Nationals.

Though his production in that 52-game segment fell well short of his track record across four-plus seasons with Washington, the adjusted OPS he compiled stood 29 points above league average. And his .778 OPS far exceeded those of his ’22 predecessors in right field — Nomar Mazara , Wil Myers , Jose Azocar and Matt Beaty .The 53-game stretch from Soto this year stands out for its streakiness, apart from his bedrock ability to draw walks.

MacKenzie Gore, 24, owns one of MLB’s highest fastball rates in his search for better accuracy. Smart move. Logging 11 starts and a 3.57 ERA with the Nats, he’s made an impressive comeback from wild spells of recent years. Lefties’ .408 batting average against him pose the lefty Gore a developmental challenge.

A wrinkle that bears watching: he’s become a pull hitter despite saying he’s at his best when he’s driving pitches to left-center and up the middle.
