Nevaeh Henrich's cool-headed action helped save the life of her friend's mother

This was a week of celebrations for Coronado High School senior Nevaeh Henrich. On Tuesday, she turned 17. On Wednesday, she received one of the Girl Scouts of America’s highest and rarest awards — its Medal of Honor.“Not many Girl Scouts get an opportunity to do that,” explains Carol Dedrich, CEO of Girls Scouts San Diego.

She had made herself a breakfast of sliced vegetables and avocado-topped toast and was sitting at her computer perusing emails when food got lodged in her throat, leaving her gasping for air. “I was really scared, but I also knew I had to take action,” Nevaeh says. “My parents are both first responders, and they taught me to stay calm and level-headed in a situation like that to be able to help.”

“When he pulled up, I could see my lips were purple,” recalls Rogers. She says the officer grabbed her around the abdomen and gave three forceful thrusts which dislodged some, but not all, of the obstruction. Then firefighters arrived and took her to the hospital. Nevaeh says it was difficult for her friends to watch their mother choking, so she reminded herself to stay calm. “I just re-assured them that she was going to be OK, and that we could handle it.”
