Opinion: Reality crept onto the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives this week and seemed to settle in for a prolonged stay.

U.S. House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy listens Wednesday in the House Chamber during the second day of elections for speaker of the House.

I reached out to Balich, who voters also elected Homer Township supervisor, because of his position as a Republican leader. Also, there are parallels between the closely divided House and the even partisan split on the 22-member Will County Board.“In order to make it so we can get work done we gave them half the committee chairmanships,” the Republican leader said.

Incredibly, the obvious path forward continued to elude the vast majority of Republicans who refused to consider anyone other than McCarthy for House speaker as of midafternoon Wednesday. They defiantly voted for McCarthy on ballot after ballot, even though it was clear he lacked the needed votes. The infighting that is blocking McCarthy from becoming speaker seemed to upset Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, who supports McCarthy. You may recall the House voted 230-199 on Feb. 4, 2021, to remove Greene from committees. Eleven Republicans voted with Democrats to remove Greene.

Some Democrats have been depicted as radical leftists. Conspiracy theorists, who seem to share a lot in common with people who believe the Earth is flat, have falsely accused Democrats of being Satanist cannibalistic pedophiles. A stalemate like the House speaker debacle played out in Illinois during the 793-day budget impasse from 2015 to 2017 during former Gov. Bruce Rauner’s administration. Moderate Republicans finally ended the gridlock by crossing the aisle and voting with Democrats to override Rauner’s budget veto.
