Fifty-seven years after a 14-year-old Aurora girl was stabbed to death - a killing that made national headlines - her tragic story was in the news again in 2022.
In September, Aurora Police Det. Benjamin Grabowski cracked open the file on this very cold case with the hope that the person who stabbed Nanette Hartman to death in her home would finally be identified through DNA testing that had never been done on her bloody clothes or the kitchen knives used to brutally kill the teen.
In September, Grabowski packed up two drinking glasses, the bloody shirt and both knives used to kill Nanette, including the blade that had been left in her heart, and sent them off to the Illinois State Police crime lab. King also knows how painful the subject is to Nanette’s 94-year-old mother and her surviving daughter, who discovered her sister’s mutilated body when she arrived home from classes at East Aurora High School that fateful day.
According to police reports, it was not much later – around 3:45 p.m. – when a neighbor two houses away heard a scream. Whether the forensic lab results come back with new information or not, he’s glad the case has been reopened. Despite the horrible memories that are dredged up, King said he appreciates the supportive comments he’s heard from people, many who, like his family, have long suspected who the killer was.
