Representatives from Colombian government and leftist ELN guerrilla group resume formal peace talks to end years of conflict
Talks with leftist guerrillas in Venezuela are part of President Gustavo Petro’s promise to bring"total peace" to Colombia.
Colombia's government and the National Liberation Army , the last recognised rebel group in the country, resumed formal peace talks in Venezuela for the first time since they were suspended in 2019. The talks will be hosted by Venezuela, Cuba, and Norway, the guarantors of the process, on a rotating basis.It is primarily active in the Pacific region and along the 2,200-kilometer border with Venezuela.Dialogue with the group started in 2016 under ex-president Juan Manuel Santos, who signed a peace treaty with the larger Marxist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia rebel group that subsequently abandoned its weapons and created a political party.
