The Coast Guard indicted two lancha crews and seized their fishing gear, a GPS, and the 480 pounds of red snapper,"The Coast Guard serves a critical role in protecting the nation's natural resources,” said Lt. Derek Petty, commanding officer of the cutter Edgar Culbertson crew. Nine Mexican fishermen were detained and transferred to border enforcement agents for processing, officials said.
"With robust partnerships between Station South Padre Island, Air Station Corpus Christi, and other partner agencies, we are able to effectively enforce and prevent illegal fishing in U.S. waters,” Petty said. Lancha boats used by fishermen can be between 20 to 30 feet long, have one outboard motor, and can travel over 30 miles per hour, authorities have said.
