Clayton Stephenson was the first Black pianist to advance to the finals of the Cliburn Piano Competition.
called Stephenson’s performance “a personal account” that was “playful when it should be.”
Stephenson won a Jury Discretionary Award at the 2015 Cliburn International Junior Piano Competition. He is now pursuing a bachelor’s degree at Harvard and a master’s degree at the New England Conservatory., Stephenson said he started to seriously consider a musical career after participating in the junior competition.
He also shared how he started playing piano.
