The relatively short Cleveland Orchestra program conducted by Fabien Gabel Saturday was a sheer sonic delight.
Violinist Simone Lamsma closed out the Cleveland Orchestra's classical season at Blossom Music Center Saturday with a performance of Saint-Saens' Violin Concerto No. 3. CUYAHOGA FALLS, Ohio – Much like the day itself, the Cleveland Orchestra’s French and Spanish program Saturday night at Blossom Music Center was simply lovely.
No one won any awards for creative programming on this, the last classical concert of the 2023 Blossom Music Festival. The lineup, a collection of mainstream repertoire by Ravel and his peers, was about as safe and traditional as they come. Lamsma isn’t a showy performer or big personality. Where others move all about and display their virtuosity, she stands largely still, channeling all her abundant talent, focus, and passion into the music.
If Lamsma was well-suited for the Saint-Saens, so was Gabel for the remainder of the program. In lively accounts of works by Ravel and Falla, the versatile conductor made clear why his native France recently named him a Chevalier of the arts. There may be no better music for a pleasant summer evening than the Suite No. 2 from Falla’s “The Three-Cornered Hat.” Replete with bold Spanish dance patterns and tangy harmonies, the three ballet excerpts make for an excellent showpiece.

The Cleveland Transit System took over from the Cleveland Railway system in 1942 and only 12 years later the streetcars shut down.
