A former doctor was sentenced to two years and six months in prison for taking kickbacks from a drug maker in exchange for prescribing the company's drug, even though it was medically unnecessary.AKRON, Ohio — A federal judge on Friday sentenced a Hudson neurologist to two-and-half years in prison for a kickback scheme in which he prescribed neurological medicine to patients who didn’t need it in exchange for cash and lavish dinners provided by the drugmaker.

Raheja teamed up with two Avanir Pharmaceuticals employees to carryout the scheme and became the nation’s leading prescriber of the drug Nuedexta. It is used to treat Pseudobulbar affect, a neurological disorder that causes sudden, involuntary episodes of laughing or crying. Raheja wrote more than 10,000 prescriptions for Nuedexta between October 2011 and April 2016. Avanir paid Raheja $331,500 and bought him expensive dinners as part of a speaker series in which Raheja gave presentations to other doctors about the benefits of prescribing the drug outside the uses approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Three others pleaded guilty in the scheme. Avanir employees Frank Mazzucco and Gregory Hayslette organized the speaker series and paid the kickbacks. Both have pleaded guilty in the case. Mazzucco faces between 15 and 21 months in prison when he’s sentenced on Feb. 15. Hayslette is set for sentencing Feb. 23.of Mayfield Heights allowed Hayslette to access patient records— a violation of patient privacy rights— and write diagnoses for Pseudobulbar affect in the files.
