The Barons play in Tier 1 hockey, which is the highest division of youth hockey in the U.S. The next step for some of these players is playing for the U18 team, while a couple could play in the U.S. Hockey League, the top junior league in the country.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — The under-16 team of the Cleveland Barons youth hockey program could go down as one of the best in the program’s history.
They got to the nationals by winning the MidAm District tournament in Columbus in early March. The Barons went 3-0 in group play before beating the Esmark Stars , 2-1, in the championship game. “To be the No. 1 seed going in , to have a bull’s-eye on you the whole time you’re there, everybody’s giving you your best shot, for us to survive through was probably one of the best accomplishments I’ve been a part of in 17 years of coaching. I mean we took everyone’s best punch, and we came out on top, which is really hard to do at this level.”The Barons finished 0-3 in pool play at the national tournament, which was 21 days after the MidAm District tournament ended.
