A Cleveland restaurant owner recalls selling scorecards during the 1948 baseball season, including the World Series. It was the last time Cleveland won the Series.
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Longtime Twinsburg restaurant owner Bob Wyman made a career out of selling meals to people. But the meal he might be most proud of is one he bought his family when he was 11.
His memories of being 11 in the fifth grade and selling scorecards are worth recalling as this year’s fall classic starts Friday, Oct. 27 - 75 years after the ‘48 Series.“I said, ‘Absolutely, we’ll get to see the games.’ "“Stanley and I had the whole season,” he said. “The scorecards were 10 cents, but there was a pencil that was either 2 or 3 cents. People would give me 15 cents and a lot of times say, ‘Keep the change, kid.
But the big day Wyman remembers didn’t come during the Series but earlier. He had worked a Yankees doubleheader. “Benny told Stanley, ‘You want to bring some kids in on Saturdays to watch the game, I’ll give you some pop and you can sit here and watch the game.’ " Wyman would go on to a life in restaurants. He opened his first Burger King in 1975 on Cedar Road. He then opened Fresh Start Diner in Twinsburg in 2006.Now he’s a minority owner of the diner, with his son running day-to-day operations. Bob shows up on weekends.
