'Man Saves Comics' includes features from the 1890s to 1980s, while 'The Art of the News' examines contemporary issue through comics journalism.
anniversary of its acquisition, a segment of the collection is on view through May 7 in “Man Saves Comics” at the Cartoon Library & Museum.The exhibit is a snapshot of one man’s obsession in preserving bygone elements of American newspapers. It includes a wealth of color comic strips, Sunday features, pulp magazines, dime novels and more, largely from the 1890s to the 1940s.
“Bill Blackbeard saved this whole history,” said Caitlin McGurk, curator of comics and cartoon art at the Cartoon Library. "He realized these beautifully colored Sunday sections would not appear in their full glory on microfilm,” McGurk said. Walking through “Man Saves Comics!” is a stroll through the heyday of newspapers, when everyone read them.
