Yes, it’s true that project bidders raised this prospect to the city years ago, as a staff memo from just before the Midway Rising vote in 2022 shows. Yes, it’s true that such taxes have been used to subsidize infrastructure in support of private projects. Yes, diversion of new revenue isn’t as onerous as some government cash grabs. Yes, the project still looks like a huge plus for the city.
