Chris Evans found voice acting in Lightyear 'daunting' because 'you really only have one string to play on. And it takes a minute to realize how colorful you can be.'
Chris Evans describes the difficulty of voice acting in Lightyear. Evans voices the classic Toy Story character Buzz Lightyear in this prequel film from Disney Pixar. The film is directed by Angus MacLane, who co-directed Pixar’s Finding Dory with Andrew Stanton in 2016, and has worked in the animation department for Pixar films since 1998’s A Bug’s Life. Lightyear also features vocal performances from Keke Palmer, The Good Dinosaur director Peter Sohn, Taika Waititi, Uzo Aduba, and Bill Hader.
After the fourth movie in the franchise, Lightyear is the first Toy Story-related film since 2019. It is the fifth overall film within the Toy Story series, as its release follows Toy Story 4, but it is the first Toy Story spinoff feature. The other toys are left out of Lightyear, which just focuses on an early space adventure of astronaut Buzz Lightyear, the real-life man who inspired the toy featured in the franchise's other movies.
“Voice acting is, it’s daunting because you really only have one string to play on. And it takes a minute to realize how colorful you can be.” Voice acting in Lightyear was clearly an adjustment for Evans, for he took some time getting used to the fact that he cannot “play” off of anything else except the script for there are not normally other actors voicing the parts simultaneously. Lightyear is not technically Evans’ first venture into voice acting. The actor starred in the 2007 Ninja Turtles adaptation TMNT as well as the 3-D animated feature Battle for Terra and an episode of Robot Chicken.
It seems like the actor found his groove, however, for the actor delivers all of the charisma that the intergalactic space hero Buzz requires. Evans has big shoes to fill, as Tim Allen inhabited the role in the first four Toy Story installments. Allen made the role iconic, so Evans would have to deliver in order for Lightyear to achieve an authentic Buzz in this new iteration of the character.
