Chris Beard’s fiancée, Randi Trew, released a statement on Friday contradicting the allegations she made to police about the University of Texas head basketball coach.
Early last week, Beard was arrested and charged with third-degree felony assault on a family/household member. Police received an urgent disturbance call around 12:15 a.m. local time on Dec. 12, the Austin Police Department announced, from a woman saying that Beard had choked her. Beard, 49, was booked at 4:18 a.m. at Travis County Jail before being indefinitely suspended by Texas later in the evening. Rodney Terry has served as interim coach in his place.
“Chris and I are deeply saddened that we have brought negative attention upon our family, friends, and the University of Texas, among others,” Trew said. “As Chris’ fiancée and biggest supporter, I apologize for the role I played in this unfortunate event. I realize that my frustration, when breaking his glasses, initiated a physical struggle between Chris and myself. Chris did not strangle me, and I told that to law enforcement that evening.
“Chris has stated that he was acting in self-defense, and I do not refute that,” Trew’s statement continued. “I do not not believe Chris was trying to intentionally harm me in any way. It was never my intent to have him arrested or prosecuted. We appreciate everyone’s support and prayers during this difficult time.”After his allegations were made public, Beard vehemently denied the accusations through his attorney.
“Coach Beard is 100 percent innocent of these charges,” Beard’s attorney Perry Minton said after the incident. “He should never have been arrested. The complainant wants him released immediately and all charges dismissed. It is truly inconceivable.” Beard is in his second season as the Longhorns’ head coach after signing a seven-year contract worth $7 million a season.
