The Commission on Human Rights has deployed quick response teams to look into the deaths of two local officials in Pampanga and Maguindanao del Sur.Barangay captain Norberto Lumbang was gunned down by unidentified suspects in front of the barangay hall in Barangay Lacquios in Arayat, Pampanga last August 11. The CHR said that Lumbang has earlier signified his intention to run as vice mayor in the 2025 midterm elections.
“Given the upcoming 2025 midterm elections, these acts of violence against officials will also impact the safe environment for every Filipino voter and their right to freely participate in electoral processes,” the agency said in a statement. “Not only do these instill fear amongst constituents, but also send a threat amongst local leaders and candidates seeking to serve the public.
