CHP offers direct advice on contending with traffic and navigating Lake Tahoe roads damaged after January's heavy rain and snow.
On busy days, in addition to three or four Truckee police officers, CHP has four or five officers on duty in the region. Those officers cover an area ranging from Kingvale to the Nevada state line 20 miles east, and from Truckee south into Kings Beach, Tahoe City and Homewood.
Tahoe's potholes can be attributed to a combination of three factors: freezing temperatures, heavy precipitation and snowplow usage, according to Peter Kulchawik, a civil engineer at Berkeley-based Balance Hydrologics. Increase any of those, and you can expect increased road damage. "Our priority is safety," Perez notes."If we have three officers stuck up on the top of I-80 dealing with a big rig, we can't also manage traffic in town."
But the most infamous section of road on the north shore is what CHP officers call"the 60-mile curve." It's a low-elevation curve on I-80 toward Truckee, roughly a mile past the Donner Pass Eastbound Rest Area.
