Plan irks district leaders, who say they were caught by surprise
A proposed sober-living facility in North Beach has drawn the ire of some nearby residents and businesses in Chinatown who argue The City must provide greater clarity in how it’s tackling housing and addiction.
“The way that this project happened, and the way that it was announced, is just outside of the norm of what is even city practice, as well as what the community is used to or expects and frankly deserves,” she said. Randy Shaw, director of the Tenderloin Housing Clinic, said during the Feb. 8 press conference that none of the 8,000 single adults living in permanent supportive housing in The City have access to a sober hotel. A survey of Tenderloin Housing Clinic residents, he said, found that nearly 70% would live in such a facility if they had the option.
