The leader of the Solomon Islands said Wednesday that his country signed a security agreement with China, renewing fear that the deal could lead to a Chinese military presence and increase tensions in the region.

U.S. will share nuclear submarine technology with Australia as part of new alliance, a direct challenge to China Wale, the opposition leader, said he worried the security agreement would lead to a crackdown on the country’s most populous province, Malaita — where there is strong opposition to the Switch — and a return to the violence that claimed about 200 lives from 1998 to 2003 before Australia intervened.
